Cataplus makes very Finnish-sounding neofolk reminiscent
of bands like October Falls and Nostatus. There's basically
two kinds of pieces here: atmospheric soundscapes and songs with vocals.
Tracks in the first category are quite different from one another, with
the strongest parts being mostly acoustic guitar and jew's harp, the
weakest synth-dominated monotone not unlike old Mortiis or prison-era
Burzum. The sung tracks are the ep's best, and they in turn are
quite unlike each other. Whereas the title track is Tenhi-like
gloomy beauty, Otsosesi, ainoseni is haughty singing with
a guitar. In all parts there is a lot of good, but there is a definite
feel of incompleteness and wanting in all of the material. There is
no definite unity in the whole, and because of it, one can't really
immerse into the feel of the pieces. As a debut Tuohiparta is still
quite good, and despite the familiarity of many elements, shows the
unique touch of the artist. J. Mäntyranta, the man behind
the band name, has picked a fine selection of instruments and created
very beautiful melodies, both of which are things that will probably
come to their full power as soon as a clear common thread to the project's
style is found. Jiituomas |
