7JK on Siebenin ja Job Karman yhteisprojekti, jossa Matt Howdenin virtuoosimainen viulu fuusioidaan puolalaisten koneisiin, huomattavan onnistuneesti. Anthems Flesh on selvästi tunnistettavissa molempien artistien työksi, mutta osaset ovat erittäin vahvassa tasapainossa, niin että syntyy uusi soundimaailma, ei pelkkää yhdistelmää entisistä. Jotkut kappaleista ovat selvästi enemmän Siebenin tyylisiä (mm. hieno Dear Claire), toiset selvästi lähempänä Job Karmaa (esim. hypnoottinen tarinateos Krau).

Näissä toisen artistin tehtävä on selvästi tukea enemmän esillä olevan linjaa, ja ratkaisu on todella toimiva. Muutama kappaleista jää hiukan mitäänsanomattomiksi, mutta tarkassa kuuntelussa niissäkin on huomattava määrä kiehtovia nyansseja ja koukkuja. Maid of Orleansin cover ei tosin nouse mitenkään erityiseksi, ja oli minulle selkeästi albumin heikko kohta. Sen sijaan runoilija Keith Howdenin teksteillä ja vokaaleilla varustettu nimikappale, ja varsinkin hirtehisen herkullinen Planning for zombie apocalypse ovat erittäin onnistuneita.

Anthems Flesh on hiukan epätasainen, mutta hyvin tyylikäs yhteislevy, joka pelaa selkeästi tekijöidensä vahvuuksilla. Fuusiot ovat kekseliäitä, monipuolisia ja hyvässä tasapainossa. Se on laaja-alainen albumi jolle voi povata hyvää vastaanottoa myös tekijöidensä fanijoukkojen ulkopuollella. Hiottua, kaunista ja kekseliästä musiikkia.

7JK is a joint project of Sieben and Job Karma, in which Matt Howden’s violin virtuosity is fused with Polish machinery, producing a remarkable success. Anthems Flesh is clearly recognizable as the work of both artists, yet the parts are in very good balance, creating a new soundscape instead of just a combination of styles. Some of the songs are definitely more in the vein of Sieben (such as the fine Dear Claire), others closer to Job Karma (like the hypnotic story-piece Krau). On those tracks, it is the job of one side to support the more prominent one, and that decision certainly works. Some pieces remain somewhat unremarkable, but with careful listening they too include lots of fascinating nuances and hooks. The cover of Maid of Orleans is, however, nothing special, and for me remained the weak point of the album. On the other hand, the title track, which features lyrics and vocals by poet Keith Howden, and especially the gallows-humor delicious Planning for zombie apocalypse, were highly successful.

Anthems Flesh is a slightly uneven yet very stylish joint album that definitely plays on the strengths of its makers. The fusions are innovative, nicely different, and in good balance. It is a wide-spectrum  album for which I can predict a good reception also outside the range of its makers’ normal fans. It is polished, beautiful and clever.
