Waldteufel - Rauhnacht

Levyltä löytyy kuitenkin kaksi todellista tärppiä: Das Wilde Heer von Hörselberg kehittää taannoisen Eines Gottes Spur 10"n rummutuspohjaista (ja rummutus on jotakin jonka Waldteufel todella osaa) tyyliä uusiin ulottuvuuksiin.

I have always had a divided opinion about German-American artist Waldteufel. On one hand, his musical output so far has been shaky, and he seems to be constantly seeking the right stylistic path. But on the other hand, in Waldteufel one can sense an unusually fiery spirit, something I can only admire.

His second full-length, Rauhnacht, is starting to show significant signs of development. The record is still somewhat uneven, most of all stylistically. Yet it does not contain a single bad track, and the expression has developed from comical to convincing. There are national romantic poems accompanied by horn music (Allerseelengebet), some solemn and sad songs with flutes and accordion (In den Zwölften, Berchta und die Spinnerin), as well as mystical soundscapes from deep primal forests (Ur-Odin). Two tracks on this album really stand out: Das Wilde Heer vom Hörselberg builds on the "progressive" percussion-driven style of Eines Gottes Spur, and develops it to completely new levels (percussion is one thing Waldteufel excels at). The continuous monotonous drumming, combined with different chimes, wind instruments and rhytmically sung vocals create an excellent whole with a "shamanic" feel. I sincerely hope Waldteufel will continue exploring this path. The other hit is the more surprising (but in the end, perhaps not) Hexe Hild, which starts with powerful fuzzy folk metal riffs, which combined with Markus Wolff´s manly singing reminds me somewhat of old metal classics like Storm and Isengard. Perhaps not everyone´s cup of tea, but for the numerous neofolk fans with a metal background this should work like a thunderclap.

Waldteufel does still deserve a fair amount of criticism, especially for his stylistic uncertainty, which is further confused by the generous use of samples. The short playing time is another minus, especially combined with the heterogenous content. Yet I state that this album is worth getting, even only for the two tracks Das Wilde Heer vom Hörselberg and Hexe Hild - they prove that the tindering primal strength I have sensed in Waldteufel since the beginning is finally starting to bloom, and that this primal strength can be a (much needed) refreshing shock to the very bland and stale neofolk-genre of today.
