Rome - Masse Mensch Material | ||

CMI:n uusi post-neofolktähti Rome on jäänyt minulta aikaisemmin huomioimatta, hypetyksestä ja tasokkaasta materiaalista huolimatta. Vaikka "post-neofolk" tuntuu kornilta termiltä, kuvaa se erinomaisesti Romen musiikkia. Neofolk-juuret paistavat kirkkaasti, mutta itse musiikki on kehittynyt joksikin aivan muuksi.

Rome kulkee siis tietä jota ovat viitoittaneet jo mm. Ostara, Orplid ja Derniere Volonté. Aivan erityisesti Rome tuo kuitenkin mieleeni Spiritual Frontin, vailla ko. yhtyeen öljyisyyttä.

CMI:s new post-neofolkstar Rome has so far escaped my attention, despite all the hype and talk about very high quality material. Although "post-neofolk" sounds like a cheesy term, it gives a perfect description of Rome´s music. Their neofolk roots are obvious, but the music has evolved far beyond that. In other words Rome treads in the footsteps of the likes of Ostara, Orplid and Derniere Volonté, but most of all they remind me of Spiritual Front, sans the sleazyness. Instead, Masse Mensch Material leans strongly towards more somber pop music, and often sounds much like Nick Cave and late Depeche Mode. Part of this is due to vocalist Jerome Reuter´s very accomplished dark singing voice. Listening to Rome´s very developed and mature compositions and following the refreshing twists Masse Mensch Material keeps serving, I no longer wonder about all the praise this band had earned. The record keeps constantly surprising me, and I will deliberately not mention any individual songs to leave the surprises to the listener. One thing I will mention, however. For some reason the record slips on the final three tracks into a very clichéd neofolk sound. A few tracks at the end cannot bring down an album that
has kept such a high quality so far. This is a prime example of the positive
sides of "neofolk´s offspring" - conveniently released
at about the same time as the new album of an unnamed icon of said genre,
showing considerable stagnation. Without hesitation my points go to Rome.
