Brighter Death Now - Necrose Evangelicum

Lisälevynä on toteutumatta jääneen Vaasan keikan (1996) harjoitustaltiointi, ”Unlive in Finland”. Mukana on kolme Necrose Evangelicumin raitaa ja kaksi muualta (Innerwarin No Pain ja Great Death III:lla ilmestynyt Open the Gates). Varsinkin Soul in Flames pääsee minusta huomattavasti varsinaista albumia kovempaa tulokseen tänä versiona, ja muutenkin tavarassa on tervetullutta ylimääräisen rujouden tuntua.

A well deserved reprint of an old classic, re-processed and with an extra disc added. The original Necrose Evangelicum was made in 1995, and presents a slower, heavier kind of Brighter Detah Now than what the band’s name probably brings to mind for most readers. All of it is slowly progressing and pounding death industrial, with something scream-like and strangely sacral to it. The album is monotonous in the good and the bad sense, and has a weird hypnotic effect. It’s a trip to a slowly beating, oppressive trance. I do, however, prefer the harsher and rougher style of BDN, so the experience is mostly just “interesting” for me.

The extra disc contains a rehearsal take for the gig in Vaasa (1996) that never took place, “Unlive in Finland”. There are three tracks from Necrose Evangelicum and two others (No Pain from Innerwar and Open the Gates, which appeared on Great Death III). Especially Soul in Flames gets, in my opinion, to reach new heights, far surpassing the original, in this version, and there is a welcome general roughness to all of the songs. It’s as if more is drawn out from the potential here than in the studio versions.

This album is a definite classic, and well deserves that status, yet is nevertheless not one of the artist’s finest works. The extra disc, however, is such a fine extra that any fan of BDN should purchase this, even if they already do own the original Necrose Evangelicum.
